Four Benefits of Travel for Seniors
Who says seniors can’t travel? Of course, we can! Jet setting to new places isn’t only exclusive to the millennials and the younger generations. Leisurely globe-trotting does not only give us great opportunities to see what the world has to offer, but it also gives us a sense of fulfilment
Travel paves the way to a healthier process of aging which leads to a longer life and more worthwhile retirement. Aside from having IG-worthy pictures that our grandchildren will double-tap, travelling also offers benefits that range from physical, mental, emotional and psychological which have been shown in various research.
Travel breaks boredom
Some people think that when we age, mobility is limited and our only option is to stay home. But with the help of mobility equipment, everyone regardless of their abilities is given a chance to feel more powerful and independent. Thanks to the help of mobility aids such as travel scooters and electric wheelchairs, it is possible to break the boredom and start actively participating in life! Travel doesn’t always have to be far or abroad, sometimes a trip to the local park or running errand unassisted can provide a great sense of accomplishment.
Travel pushes us out of our comfort zone
Travelling in unfamiliar territories means that we are able to do new things and collect more experiences worth sharing. Positive experiences also help build confidence, as we are able to conquer the fears that hold us back. Travelling, experiencing new customs, sampling new cuisines and flavours isn’t restricted by our age or our abilities, rather by our mindset. There are many inspiring stories that document how people of all ages and abilities have been able to overcome their challenges, faced their fears and lived happier, more fulfilled lives thanks for it.
Travel helps us grow our relationships
When we travel with our family and friends, we get to know them even more. They get to know us even more. It unmasks a layer of our personality as they spend more time with us away from our usual environment at home. Travelling on your own is a whole other experience. It makes us vulnerable and requires us to step out of our comfort zones to meet new people and form new connections. If travelling on your own is not an option, there are many great retreats and tours that offer the best of both worlds!
Travel is good for your health
According to a report called Destination Healthy Aging: The Physical, Cognitive and Social Benefits of Travel, “after being on vacation, 89% of people are able to leave the stressors of work behind and relax. This has long-term effects, as stress has been shown to play a damaging role in health and can actually speed up the aging process.”
Moreover, one study showed that women who took their vacation every six years or less had a significantly higher risk of developing heart disease compared to women who vacationed at least twice a year. Similarly, another study said that men who did not take an annual vacation had a 20% higher risk of death and a 30% greater risk of death from heart disease.
