Part 2: Navigating the Mobility Scooter Market

Welcome to Part 2 of our Buyer's Guide series, tailored to help you navigate the world of mobility scooters. At Motobility, we understand the significance of finding the right mobility solution to enhance your independence and quality of life. In this guide, we'll delve into the nuances of mobility scooters, exploring their features, customization options, and factors to consider when making your purchase decision.

Introduction to Mobility Scooters:

Mobility scooters are designed to provide comfortable and convenient transportation for individuals with mobility limitations over longer distances. Mobility Scooters can be used as Car Replacements and for short-term use, such as at shopping centers, on holidays or while walking the dog. Depending on your use, there are many different models to choose from. Motobility carries the largest range of Mobility Scooters in WA.

Mobility Scooters vs Electric Wheelchairs: Choosing the Right Option

While electric wheelchairs offer unparalleled maneuverability and control in tight spaces, mobility scooters shine in scenarios where long-distance travel and outdoor exploration are paramount. Mobility scooters are the preferred choice for individuals with relatively good upper body strength and coordination, enabling them to navigate diverse landscapes with ease. However, it's crucial to assess your specific mobility needs and lifestyle preferences to determine which option aligns best with your requirements.

The Importance of Making the Right Decision for Years to Come

Investing in a mobility scooter is an investment in your independence and mobility for years to come. Therefore, it's essential to conduct thorough research and consider various factors before making your purchase.

Our team at Motobility understands that each individual's needs are unique, and there is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to mobility requirements. That's why we take the time to get to know you, your mobility challenges, and your goals. Whether you're seeking a scooter for occasional use, a large scooter to get your independence back or a lightweight option to use while travelling.

With our free test rides both in-store and in the comfort of your own home, you can experience firsthand how different mobility aids perform in real-world situations. We're committed to ensuring that you feel confident and comfortable with your choice, empowering you to live life to the fullest.

Types of Mobility Scooters

Mobility scooters come in a range of configurations to accommodate diverse user preferences and mobility challenges. From compact travel scooters ideal for navigating tight spaces to heavy-duty models capable of tackling rugged terrain, there's a scooter to suit every lifestyle and mobility requirement.

We not only offer different types of scooters as listed below but also innovative and unique models such as the self-loading Quingo Flyte scooter with a docking station and the Quingo range of 5-wheel scooters, which offer unrivalled stability and maneuverability and are perfect for taller users.

Travel Scooters: Lightweight and portable, travel scooters are suitable for errands and travel, offering easy disassembly and transport in vehicles. They feature lightweight lithium batteries and can easily be folded either manually or at the push of a button. The newest models that have been released feature Carbon Fibre frames and weigh 19.8kg without batteries. The lightweight design has a few drawbacks, as it allows for fewer comfort features. If a lot of outdoor use is required, especially on surfaces that could be bumpy, we recommend looking at Portable Scooters instead. If you are worried about being able to lift the weight, Motobility offers several different Hoist options. Including portable hoists and boot hoists, which are installed into your car.

Portable Scooters: Slightly larger than the travel scooters, these scooters generally boast more comfortable features such as pneumatic tyres, swivel seats and suspension. All while still being portable. Meaning, that while they don’t fold up into neat packages like the travel scooters, you can dismantle them into lighter easier to manage pieces. This can allow for easier loading and a wider variety of uses, and depending on the design might be suitable for use on grass and small hills. While all portable scooters are designed to be able to be taken apart, the process of how this is done varies widely between models. At Motobility we have over 9 portable scooters in our range. As part of our demonstration, either in our showroom or in your home (yes this is free and without obligation), our friendly product specialists will not only demonstrate how to best dismantle the product and lift it into your vehicle. But will teach you how to do it independently and point you towards models that match your abilities.

Medium Scooters: Medium Scooters aren’t portable anymore. They can be transported using vans, and utes and can even be fitted into some vehicles such as a Kia Carnival, with the use of a AutoChair SmartHoist. These products are generally designed to act as a car replacements. They are a great option if you don’t drive or prefer the scooter for shorter trips around your neighbourhood. These scooters come equipped with many features to ensure you stay safe and comfortable throughout the journey. Medium scooters are great if you will be using your scooter on busy footpaths or inside shopping centres as they are slimmer in the frame and, hence, easier to handle.

Depending on your preferences, weight, the terrain where you are going to use the scooter and the distance you need to travel, we will recommend a medium or a Large, heavy-duty scooter.  Heavy-duty Scooters: Heavy-duty scooters feature increased weight capacity and stability, making them suitable for individuals with larger frames or those who require additional support for outdoor activities. They are also great options for more rural settings. The top-of-the-line models offer features such as double seat padding, sophisticated suspension systems and larger chunkier tyres.

Factors to Consider When Choosing the Right Mobility Scooter

External Factors:

  • Terrain and Environment:

One of the primary considerations when selecting a mobility scooter is the terrain and environment in which you'll be using it. Different scooters are designed to navigate various surfaces, including smooth pavement, gravel paths, and rugged terrain. For urban environments, compact and maneuverable scooters may be preferred, while heavy-duty models with enhanced suspension and larger wheels are better suited for outdoor exploration.

  • Range of Travel:

Consider the distance and frequency of your travel when choosing a mobility scooter. For those who require long-range mobility solutions, scooters with extended battery life and higher speed capabilities are essential. Additionally, portability is a crucial factor for individuals who frequently travel or need to transport their scooter in a vehicle. Foldable and lightweight scooters offer convenience and ease of transport in such situations.

  • Storage and Portability:

Evaluate the storage and portability options available for the mobility scooter. If you have limited space at home or in care facilities, compact scooters that can be easily stored and maneuvered in tight spaces are preferable.

If you will mainly use the scooter for travel or loading in/out of the car, consider the ease of folding and loading to ensure it’s something that can easily be done safely.

Your Skills and Abilities:

  • Physical Strength and Coordination:

If you are considering a portable option, consider who will do the folding and lifting of your travel scooter or portable scooter. Oftentimes assistance by a partner, carer or family member may be required. There are also options such as a scooter hoist that can be considered for more independence.

Some scooters, such as 3-wheel models and models with 2 front wheels placed closer together, require more balance while riding as well as when getting on and off. Ensure you can navigate these tasks safely before locking in an option.

  • Comfort and Ergonomics:

Prioritize comfort and ergonomic features to enhance your experience while using the mobility scooter. Adjustable seating, armrests, and tiller height contribute to proper posture and support during extended periods of use. Additionally, consider features such as suspension systems and shock absorbers to minimize discomfort and fatigue when navigating uneven terrain.

Your height and pre-existing health conditions will have a significant impact on which product choice is the best one for you. If you have long legs, or hip and/or knee pain consider the Quingo range of mobility scooters, as they offer ergonomic adjustable floating footplates.

  • Safety Considerations:

Safety is paramount when choosing a mobility scooter. Look for safety features such as lights, reflectors, and audible signals to increase visibility and alert others of the scooter's presence, especially in low-light conditions or crowded environments. Additionally, ensure the scooter's brakes are responsive and easy to engage, providing you with confidence and control while navigating various terrain.

As mentioned earlier, ensure you can safely enter and exist the scooter and ask for training on the correct cornering technique and how to best navigate obstacles or traverse inclines.

Customization and Accessories

Personalizing your mobility scooter with custom accessories can enhance both functionality and style. Mobility Scooters can be fitted with many different accessories to customise the gopher to your needs. This may include an All-weather canopy such as the Scooterpac, a rear shopping bag or a folding weather shield, such as the Movo.
